Bond Buyers Looking Long-Term as October Fed Meeting Looms

1017 ET - Investors are buying longer-term Treasurys over short-term ones, driving long-term rates down faster ahead of Wednesday's CPI report and the Federal Reserve's rate-setting meeting later this month, BMO analysts say in a research note. Short-term interest rates haven't moved much because investors are feeling confident that the Fed will hold rates in October and bump them up a quarter-point in December, the analysts say. The prospect of a hike this month have been undercut by recent public speeches from Fed officials, who have hinted at a gradual path toward higher policy rates, they say.
