Eli Lilly's (LLY) Onswik insulin injection, or insulin efsitora alfa, has been authorized by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes, the regulator said Tuesday.

The long-acting basal insulin is administered once weekly, potentially reducing the number of injections from as many as 365 a year to 52 for some patients, the MHRA said.

The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence previously issued final draft guidance recommending insulin efsitora alfa as an option for certain adults with type 2 diabetes, subject to regulatory approval, which has now been granted.

The most commonly reported adverse reaction with insulin efsitora alfa is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, the regulator said.
